All Valley Karate Tournament

The All Valley Karate Tournament is a Karate Tournament held in the Los Angeles in The Karate Kid, The Karate Kid Part III, and Cobra Kai.

History

Pre Karate Kid

The tournament first debuted in 1969. The Cobra Kai Dojo had been competing since the late 1970s and managed to win the tournament 4 times between the late 1970s and 1983, thanks to one or two unnamed champions in 1979 and 1980 (possibly), and Cobra Kai star Johnny Lawrence winning in both 1982 and 1983.

The Karate Kid

Daniel LaRusso makes enemies with Johnny and his friends at Cobra Kai. When it is agreed that Daniel will compete against the Cobra Kai's in the All Valley tournament, Miyagi (maintenance man in Daniel's apartment complex) trains him. Daniel enters the tournament as a newcomer, while Johnny enters as the two time defending champion. Daniel defeats Johnny in the finals with the crane kick to the face, to become the next champion.

The Karate Kid Part II

Although not held, the aftermath from the 84 Tournament is shown as Cobra Kai's sensei John Kreese destroys Johnny's 2nd-place trophy and attempts to choke him, only to be stopped and defeated by Miyagi. Johnny and the rest of the students likely resign from Cobra Kai following this incident, as they finally realize how cruel and unethical of a man Kreese truly is.

The Karate Kid Part III

Months following the aftermath of the 1984 tournament, Kreese is revealed to be broke because of having no students in the last several months, but Terry Silver (true founder of Cobra Kai, war buddy, and friend of Kreese) decides to help him get revenge on Daniel and Miyagi. Daniel wants to fight in the next All Valley in order to defend his title, but Miyagi requests him not to. While Daniel accepts Miyagi's request, he is soon brought in by Terry, who tricks him into thinking he wants to train him. However, his true intentions are to make Daniel believe he is strong and during the tournament, Mike Barnes (whom Terry hired) will defeat and humiliate Daniel, which will re-popularize Cobra Kai and make everyone enroll, and he'll be able to reopen and run it with Kreese.

Daniel is given a bye to the finals, due to a new rule giving the defending champion an automatic spot in the finals. During the finals, Mike under Silver's order, repeatedly wins a point, but then commits an illegal move, resulting in him losing the point, so that he has more chances to attack Daniel and cause him pain, as Silver wants to suffer more than just lose. Mike severely injures and scares Daniel. However, in the sudden death round Daniel uses a trick he learned from Miyagi to flip Mike and win the tournament for the second year in a row, ending Cobra Kai for good (or so it seems). Additionally, the All-Valley Tournament Committee forever bans Cobra Kai from competing in future tournaments after 1985 due to the incessant illegal and unsportsmanlike behavior of Silver, Kreese and Barnes throughout the 1985 tournament.

Pre Cobra Kai

At some point after the tournament in 1985, The All-Valley Committee permanently bans Cobra Kai from competing in the tournament going forward. In the 33 years between the third film and Cobra Kai the only known champion is Xander Stone of Topanga Karate who won the tournament in 2017. No champions between 1986-2016 are revealed, though Topanga Karate are implied to have won during that time or an unknown dojo.

Cobra Kai

Season 1

34 years after the 1984 tournament, Johnny, who has been down on his luck since the tournament, decides to re-open Cobra Kai and redeem himself. Johnny trains his students throughout the course of a few months and proceeds to have Cobra Kai unbanned from the All Valley after the events of Part III, much to the dismay of Daniel, who attempts to make the ban last. Cobra Kai is unbanned and the students fight, and eventually, through the challenge of Miguel Diaz and Robby Keene, Cobra Kai wins the tournament, and have a new found popularity. Despite their victory, it turned out that Miguel and a few others used dirty tactics to win.

Season 2

Though not held, the performances by Miguel and fellow Cobra Kai student Hawk in the tournament, result in several teenagers joining Cobra Kai, and Johnny rebukes and punishes his students, Miguel and Hawk in particular, for their dirty tactics in the tournament.

Season 3

During the duration of his coma, Miguel was dreaming about fighting an unidentified opponent to defend his title as champion in the All Valley Tournament. In the episode The Good, The Bad, and The Badass, the tournament was canceled by the the city council in light of the karate brawl incident at West Valley High during the episode No Mercy. The decision was ultimately overturned following an appeal hearing heralded by Miguel Diaz and Samantha LaRusso. In the season finale December 19, following a deadly brawl between Daniel and Kreese, the latter proposes settling the score in the upcoming tournament.

The tournament should be held.

Trivia

• Though not confirmed, it is possible that the tournament started by the time Cobra Kai was founded, meaning the tournament would have debuted in the late 1970s.
• The earliest champion known is Vidal However, Vidal is not the first person to win.
• In an article about the 1983 All Valley, it stated that Kreese led Cobra Kai to their 4th win, possibly indicating that they won in 1979 and 1980, though the champions in those years are unnamed.
• Johnny and Daniel are currently the only champions to win twice, and in back to back years.
