Notes and Trivia
- This is the final season of the series.
- The creators of the series chose to end Cobra Kai on their terms, telling Netflix they wouldn't be returning for another season, despite Netflix being in talks with the creators and cast to make a seventh season.[9]
- According to Bob Dearden, writing for season 6 began in February 2023.
- During Atlanta Comic Convention, Ralph Macchio divulged that principal photography would commence in late spring of 2023, stating that the month of May is the "pencil plan" to get started.
- According to co-creator Jon Hurwitz, Season 6 will be set roughly a year after the Season 2 finale which would be Fall 2019.[10]
- The total episode count for Season 6 originally had conflicting information. It was reported to have 15 episodes before the WGA and SAG strikes, which would have been the most amount of episodes ever produced in a season of Cobra Kai.[11] However, Hayden Schlossberg claimed in a Twitter post on December 25, 2023, that the series would consist of 10 episode with extended runtimes, making it the longest season in runtime.[12]
- When Netflix released the episode count, they confirmed the fifteen episode count. Additionally, the season would release in three parts; July 18th, November 28th, and the finale sometime in 2025.[13] The evening before the premiere of the first part, it was announced the the timetable for the second part had been advanced and would release on November 15th instead.[3]
- The first episode of season six is written by Bob Dearden.[14]
- Pre-production and writing sessions for the season were put on hold starting May 2, 2023, as a result of the Writers Guild of America strike. Sessions were planned to resume when the WGA makes a fair deal with AMPTP.[15]
- Jon Hurwitz assured fans that Season 6 will not be canceled because of the strike.[16]
- The WGA strike against the AMPTP ended on September 27, 2023, allowing for writing to resume on Season 6, barring any exceptions.[17]
- On September 27, 2023, after the WGA strike officially ended, Jon Hurwitz confirmed they would return to writing Season 6.[18] He also said that most of season six hadn't been written yet.[19]
- The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) officially voted to go on strike on July 13, 2023,[20] and the strike officially began at midnight (July 14, 2023). The strike guidelines dictate that "union’s 160,000 affected members are prohibited from all principal on-camera work — including acting, singing, dancing and stunts — on top of off-camera work, such as voice-acting and narration. Also barred is background and stand-in work, negotiations for future services and any ancillary work for a struck production, among other things."[21] Filming for Cobra Kai was placed on hold until a fair deal is negotiated between SAG and the AMPTP.
- On August 17, 2023, Jon Hurwitz gave an update on Season 6, saying that they would get right back to filming the series when both SAG and the WGA got fair deals.[22]
- SAG reached a fair deal on November 8, 2023, and the strike officially ended at 12:01 AM on November 9, 2023. Cobra Kai is set to start filming in late December or early January.[23]
- Filming for the series was set to resume in 2024.[24]
- Pre-production for the sixth season restarted on January 2, 2024, in Atlanta, Georgia. The series had an expected shoot date of January 31, 2024.[25] Cameras began rolling a week later on January 10, 2024.[26]
- Co-creator Hayden Schlossberg hosted a Q&A for his Twitter followers on December 25, 2023, in which he teased several plot lines for the sixth and final season.
- The new dojo name will be revealed in the first episode.[27]
- When asked if the history of Miyagi-Do Karate would be explored, he responded that fans learn about everyone's "past, present, and future".[28]
- The crew is aiming for a 2024 release date,[29] hoping to get the series out "ASAP."[30]
- The series finale will be one of the longer episodes in the season.[29]
