A 1983 Avanti Convertible was the car Johnny Lawrence's could be seen driving in The Karate Kid. It is entirely possible that he bought it new.

At some point before we see the car in 1984 it received several alterations, these included a modified front bumper.

- This was, in essence, a prototype model of the 1984 convertible.
- The car was custom modified for the film by Richard Straman using a 1982 coupe, In order for the top mechanism to fold into its well, the gas tank had to be altered.
- Molds from this car were used to build the production model convertibles in 1984.
- A 1983 Avanti Convertible had a MSRP of $13,400 in 1983, which when adjusted for inflation would be $36,729 by today's standards.
