The San Fernando Valley, known locally as The Valley, is an urbanized valley in Los Angeles, California. It is the main setting for The Karate Kid franchise and Cobra Kai.

The Karate Kid[]

Daniel LaRusso is new in town, and is getting picked on by the local bullies, who all are adept in karate. Determined to stick up for himself, Daniel begins to teach himself karate, only to discover that the caretaker at his apartment seems to be a grand master in karate. Agreeing to teach Daniel, Mr. Miyagi shows Daniel that there is more to karate than violence, and perhaps the best way to solve the problem he has with the bullies is in the All-Valley Karate Championship Tournament.

The Karate Kid Part III[]

John Kreese is still brooding over the defeat handed to him by Daniel LaRusso and Mr. Miyagi. With his slimy partner, Terry Silver, Kreese plans an intricate payback that involves hiring Karate's Bad Boy, Mike Barnes to rob Daniel of his championship title. When Mr. Miyagi refuses to train Daniel, even under threat, the boy makes the mistake of turning to Terry for guidance.

Cobra Kai[]

Season 1[]

Thirty-four years after the now infamous 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament, Daniel LaRusso is a highly respected member of the San Fernando Valley community, owning a successful auto company. When outcast Johnny Lawrence decides to reopen Cobra Kai Dojo, it kicks off a series of events that impacts the greater town. As Johnny and Daniel vie for the publics attention to defer the interest to their respective companies, they take shots at one another through the media. The events build up to the 2018 All Valley Karate Tournament, where dojos from across the valley attended, and the public interest in the tournament was peaked given the recent displays by Cobra Kai. Miguel Diaz wins the All Valley after injuring Robby Keene and resorting to unethical tactics. Daniel decides it's time for him to reopen Miyagi-Do Karate as a better alternative to Cobra Kai, as their mentality has begun to spread to infect the larger valley.

Season 2[]

With the tension between Cobra Kai and Miyagi-Do mounting, Daniel and Johnny take shots at one another in the media, dissing the other's dojos as they compete for more students. John Kreese returns to Cobra Kai, which causes a power struggle between Johnny and Kreese. New rivalries begin to form between students of the respective karate dojos. Cobra Kai starts a fight at the mall and vandalizes their rival dojo. On the first day of school, a fight occurs between the dojos. The fight resulted in Robby Keene kicking Miguel Diaz off a second-floor balcony, and Samantha LaRusso getting injured by Tory Nichols. Kreese retakes Cobra Kai from Johnny and Daniel shuts down Miyagi-Do.

Season 3[]

After the karate fight at West Valley High School, Miguel Diaz wakes up after being in a coma for two weeks. Daniel and Johnny must repair the damage caused by their rivalry as Cobra Kai sensei John Kreese continues to make his students more ruthless fighters. While the rivalry between Miyagi-Do and Cobra Kai continues to grow, Johnny forms Eagle Fang Karate to combat Kreese's Cobra Kai. Daniel must head to Okinawa to save his business and to find himself. A fight at the arcade results in Demetri getting his arm broken. Ali Mills returns to the valley for Christmas break, and helps settle tension between Daniel and Johnny. After the Cobra Kais attack the Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang students at the LaRusso House, Daniel and Johnny confront Kreese, who has taken Robby to become a student of his dojo. Kreese proposes that their feud is settled at the tournament. If Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang win the 2019 tournament, Cobra Kai shuts down. If Cobra Kai wins, Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang must shut down and Johnny can no longer teach their students. Daniel and Johnny team up to stop Cobra Kai. Meanwhile, Kreese calls up Terry Silver, but Silver declines.

Season 4[]

Daniel and Johnny have teamed up to stop Cobra Kai, but their philosophies are clashing. Luckily, the students are there to settle tension and help build a sparring deck for the united dojo. Kreese visits Terry Silver to ask him to rejoin Cobra Kai, but he refuses. After a change of heart, Terry rejoins Cobra Kai. Kenny Payne joins Cobra Kai and finds a mentor in Robby. Miguel begins to become adapted to Daniel's teachings, while Sam begins to become adapted to Johnny's teachings. Robby begins to teach the Cobra Kai students defensive techniques. After finding out that Silver has returned, Daniel plans to take over the students' training, but Johnny won't allow that. It results in Johnny and Daniel having a rematch, which causes the dojos to split. Eli Moskowitz joins Miyagi-Do after regaining his confidence and Devon Lee joins Eagle Fang. Tory has been re-enrolled in school after getting approval from Amanda. Kreese and Silver's teaching methods differ, which leads to a change in their friendship. Tory visits Amanda for help in order to get back into school. At the junior prom, Miguel and Sam attend as well as Robby and Tory, who have become a couple. After a disastrous afterparty fight, Miguel becomes emotionally broken after Robby said that Johnny doesn't love him and a drunk Johnny refers to Miguel as Robby. At the tournament, Eli wins the boys division while Tory wins the girls division. Silver plans to open several Cobra Kai dojos across the valley. Miguel and Sam reconcile at the tournament after what happened at prom. Ultimately, Cobra Kai wins for scoring more points. Tory finds out that Silver had cheated to win by bribing the referee. Robby reconciles with Johnny after discovering that Cobra Kai turned Kenny into a bully. Terry takes over Cobra Kai and betrays Kreese by framing him for attacking Stingray (who was assaulted by Silver to secure him a spot) by having him arrested. Miguel goes to Mexico to find his mysterious father, leaving behind a note for his mom. Johnny promises to find Miguel and bring him home. Daniel teams up with Chozen to stop Cobra Kai.

Season 5[]

Following the 51st All Valley, Terry Silver expands Cobra Kai throughout the valley and recruits Kim Da-Eun and 6 other sensei's. After shutting down Miyagi-Do, Daniel and Chozen come up with several attempts to stop Silver's expansion plan. Johnny and Robby managed to bring Miguel back home from Mexico. Tory has been working with Kreese to bring down Silver by remaining in the dojo as a mole. The Miyagi-Do, Eagle Fang, Cobra Kai students continue to feud which spills all over at a waterpark. When Daniel's obsession has been getting too far, Amanda (who took Sam and Anthony) spends time away from the karate drama in Columbus, Ohio. While there, she learns from Jessica Andrews on Daniel and Silver's relationship in 1985. Johnny and Carmen discover that they're having a baby. He manages to help Miguel and Robby end their beef by fighting that results with the two reconciling and befriending each other while they found out about the baby. Through a newspaper, Daniel learns that Kreese was framed and tried to talk to Stingray but he refuses to tell the truth. Silver, in response to Daniel's latest attempt, beats him up. This leads to Daniel giving up his fight. Amanda, Johnny, Chozen, and Sam tried to come up with their next move, but then realize that they need Daniel to lead them. They, along with the rest of the Miyagi-Fang students including Robby, managed to convince Daniel to continue his fight with Miyagi-Do reopening and Anthony joining the team.

After learning from Kreese about Silver's next plan, the combined Miyagi-Do and Eagle Fang plans to participate in the Sekai Taikai. On the demonstration at the Cobra Kai dojo, Kenny wins the boys match (due to Silver bribing the referee that led Tory to walk out) and Sam wins the girls division that results with both Miyagi-Fang and Cobra Kai to qualify in the tournament. While Miyagi-Fang were celebrating, Tory reveals to them that Silver rigged her and Sam's match. The Miyagi-Fang managed to convince Stingray to reveal Silver's assault on him. After being forced to break her hand while punching a stone, Tory defects Cobra Kai and make amends with Sam while they come up with a plan to expose Silver.

Mike Barnes, who reformed himself and wanted revenge on Silver for burning down his furniture store, joins forces with Johnny and Chozen to fight Silver at the latter's house while also fighting the Cobra Kai sensei's. The Miyagi-Fang students and Tory break in to the Cobra Kai dojo to find evidence of Silver's assault on Stingray only to find out that he erased the video to cover his tracks. Tory decides to use the video of Silver's confession of the All Valley referee to her. While uploading, the Miyagi-Fangs and Tory gets into a fight with the Cobra Kai student and Kim Da-Eun. After the lengthy fight, the video has been uploaded in front of everyone and all the Cobra Kai student are shocked of Silver's cheating. Daniel, Amanda, Carmen, and Stingray has arrived and so does Silver. After he unsuccessfully tries to convince his students what he did for them, Silver challenges Daniel to another fight. Daniel utilizes everything he learned, using Miyagi-Do, Eagle Fang, Cobra Kai teaching, and the QuickSilver method, he uses the crane kick to defeat Silver. Kenny and all the Cobra Kai students then quit the dojo. Johnny, Chozen, and Mike arrive and reunites with Daniel outside. Silver is arrested and sentenced to prison for his crimes. While Daniel and Johnny celebrate, they found out from the detective that Kreese has escaped from prison after faking his death with help from his fellow inmate.

Season 6[]

With Silver gone, Cobra Kai has been closed down. The 2019-2020 school year at West Valley High has begun with Robby re-enrolled and several West Valley Middle School students including Kenny and Anthony staring their freshman year. Several former Cobra Kai students including Tory and Kenny have now joined Miyagi-Do. The Miyagi-Fang students are now on good terms with the former Cobra Kai's with Sam and Tory becoming friends after an awkward double date with their respective boyfriends. Johnny discovers that the warehouse he uses to train Eagle Fang has been demolished. After realizing that Eagle Fang is another version of Cobra Kai, Johnny decides to officially join Miyagi-Do. Fleeing from the US to South Korea, Kreese joins forces with Kim Da-Eun and train their students for the Sekai Taikai. The Miyagi-Do students comes up with their future plans after high school with Miguel planning to apply to Stanford and Hawk and Demetri planning to apply to MIT, even though Hawk consider to apply to other colleges. Johnny gets a job at LaRusso Auto in order to find support for his family while planning to rent a new house for them to live. At Carmen's gender reveal at the LaRusso House, Johnny and Carmen finds out that their baby is a girl. At Mr. Miyagi's old house, Daniel, Amanda, and Chozen find a hidden box filled with many secrets that Miyagi never told them about. Daniel is shocked to see that Miyagi once committed an assault and robbery. After finding clues at a boxing gym, Daniel begins stressing out on all the information Mr. Miyagi never told him about.

The Sekai Taikai announces their location: Barcelona, Spain; everyone is shocked to find out that only 6 fighters can compete. Daniel and Johnny invite Mike Barnes to help them pick their students due to his unbiased nature. Mike has the students go through various challenges in the dojo and the woods. Miguel, Robby, Sam, Tory, Demetri and Devon are chosen to represent the Miyagi-Do in the tournament. Due to Daniel still struggling with Mr. Miyagi's past secrets, it mess with his relationship with Johnny and it spills all over at the dealership. Tory discovers that her ill mother, Grace, passed away even though she was previously getting better. This begins to mess with her mind and it causes her to fight aggressively during her and Sam's match for female captain. After Daniel and Amanda stops the fight due to Tory being unstable, she quits Miyagi-Do. The decision creates a rift between Daniel and Johnny with Johnny claiming that he's done with Daniel after the tournament as both his partner and his employee. Robby and Sam are the captains of Miyagi-Do and Hawk replaces Tory. While putting on the Sekai Taikai headband, Daniel is shocked to discover that Mr. Miyagi once fought in the tournament. With training over, Daniel, Johnny, Robby, Sam, Miguel, Hawk, Demetri, and Devon heads to Barcelona to compete in the Sekai Taikai where they're shocked to see Kreese there, Cobra Kai still being alive, and Tory rejoining Cobra Kai.

Notes and Trivia[]

  • In the first three films, the setting was all filmed in California. When Cobra Kai came out, most of the show was filmed in Atlanta, Georgia, with very little of it in actual California.
  • Throughout the films and the show, locations have been explored outside the Valley. Those locations include: Boston (in Massachusetts), Japan (Okinawa, Naha City, and Tokyo), Mexico (during Season 5), Columbus (in Ohio during Season 5), South Korea, Barcelona (in Spain during Season 6).
